The Scenic Rim is a meeting of escarpment, valley, weather and life. Valley & Stone follows light, scale and presence across a great inland landscape.

Featured Works

Valley Edge

Main Range National Park

Captured at first light from Bare Rock, this image looks north across the folded country of the Great Dividing Range. Soft morning haze settles through the valleys below while the first sun reaches the upper ridgelines. Lyrebirds called from the timbered slopes beneath the lookout, adding to the stillness of the scene. A quiet and expansive opening view of the Scenic Rim.

A companion work from the region, Layers at Last Light, is featured within Chapter One: Seeing, exploring the evening layers and shadows looking west into the Goomburra Valley in Main Range National Park.

First Breath

Mount Barney National Park

Taken from the East Peak summit of Mount Barney in late March, this photograph overlooks a valley filled with low cloud stretching deep into the distance. Early warmth touches the surrounding ridges while the mountain stands clear above the morning inversion. Soft layers, calm light and scale combine to create one of the Scenic Rim’s most recognisable views.

A companion work from this region, After the Heat, features a west facing perspective from the same location at sunset the day before. This work is presented in Chapter Two: Vivid.

Beneath Mount Moon

Croftby

Photographed near sunset after a warm late January day in the Scenic Rim, this image looks across the valley beneath Mount Moon while the landscape still holds the saturation of a wet summer. Greens remain rich through the foreground and lower slopes, while soft evening light settles over the mountain itself. The scene reflects the fuller, more vivid character of country after rain and heat.

Veil on the Rim

Main Range National Park

Photographed at sunset from Lizard Point, this image looks west toward the Steamer Range as cloud lifts from the valley floor and drifts across the ridges. Warm evening light catches the vapour and escarpment while grasstrees stand firm in the foreground. A moment of weather, resilience and shifting country.

Companion works from this region, Burn Line featured in Chapter Two: Vivid and Valley of Song featured in Chapter One: Seeing showcases the rugged and remote escarpments surrounding Mount Steamer under passing light.

The Long Plain

Fassifern Valley

Captured in late August after passing rain, this elevated view looks across agricultural flats beneath distant peaks. Fields, grazing yards and paddocks fall in and out of shadow as breaks of light move across the plain. A broad and layered scene showing the relationship between country and livelihood.

First Warmth

Aratula

Taken on a crisp winter morning in late June, this photograph captures first light moving across the grassed ridgelines of the Main Range. Mount Cordeaux rises beyond while cold air still holds in the valleys below. The clean glow of winter sunrise brings texture and warmth to the high country.

Jewel in the Gum

Lake Maroon

Photographed in May beside Lake Maroon, this image captures a musk lorikeet feeding among fresh gum blossom. Bright plumage and lively posture contrast against the softer tones of leaf and branch. A small but unmistakable burst of colour within the wider landscape.

A companion work of this subject, Among Blossoms, featured in Chapter Two: Vivid, captures a Musk Lorikeet in another rare still moment.

Moogerah Night

Lake Moogerah

Captured beneath clear August skies, this night image frames the galactic core above Lake Moogerah. Gum leaves below were lit softly by nearby campfire light, adding warmth and depth to the foreground. Sky, fire and country combine in a distinctly Australian evening scene.

South of Sunset

Mount Barney National Park

Taken on the evening before First Breath, this photograph looks south of Mount Barney across the border country into northern New South Wales. Two small figures on the escarpment provide scale against the open landscape and fading light. A reminder of how large this country remains.

A companion work from this region, Breakthrough, featured in Chapter Two: Vivid, captures the neighbouring peak, Mount Maroon, using human presence to showcase scale.

Old Companions

Christmas Creek

Captured at sunset in late August, this image centres on a dense cluster of grasstrees standing high above Christmas Creek. A rising moon sits quietly overhead as the last light warms the old trunks and flowering spears. An enduring portrait of age, place and presence.

A companion work from this region, Ancient Towers, featured in Chapter Two: Vivid showcases another perspective of the same stand of grasstrees at sunset.

Alone Along The Rim

Main Range National Park

Photographed from the same sunrise as Valley Edge, this alternate angle places more emphasis on the rim itself and the scale of country beyond. Light lifts gently across the slopes while the valley falls away below. A quieter image built around distance, solitude and awe.

A companion work from this region, Layers at Last Light, featured in Chapter One: Seeing showcases the western view into the Goomburra Valley at sunset.

Stone Above Country

Fassifern Valley

Taken in August at sunset, this image places Mount French in the foreground with the Mount Barney massif and McPherson Range beyond. Light catches the stone faces of both ranges while the valleys below remain in shadow. A layered portrait of Scenic Rim geology and scale.

A companion work from this region, Red Escarpment, featured in Chapter Two: Vivid, captures the final burst of sunset glow along the Mount French cliffline.

On the Scenic Rim

Years of walking, waiting and returning to the Scenic Rim have helped shape Bushies Studio. I am drawn back by the solitude, the challenge, and the moments of scale and beauty that arrive. This collection is a nod to a place that rewards patience, respect and return.

These ranges, valleys and waterways hold stories far older than my own experience. I acknowledge the Yugambeh and Ugarapul peoples for their enduring connection to Country and continued strength of culture. I remain grateful for the generosity, stories and warm invitation that have helped deepen my understanding of this place.
